Great Neck, a village on the north shore of Long Island, N.Y., is not only a short distance from New York City, it's got plenty of its own amenities for the business or vacation traveler. This town is rich in history and a wide array of locally owned shops, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, and more. Great Neck, located in Nassau County, is only about 1.4 square miles. It was settled in the late 17th century and became a symbol for the decadence of the Roaring '20s. Today this bedroom community of New York City is alive with a vibrant mix of activities and attractions. Among them are the Saddle Rock Grist Mill, which dates back to the early 1700s, and Steppingstone Park. While New York City is easily accessed via the Long Island Railroad, there are many stops in nearby areas that are within a few miles of Great Neck. Among them are the Science Museum of Long Island, the Polish American Museum, the Nassau County Museum of Art, American Guitar Museum, and the Goudreau Museum of Mathematics in Art and Science. This town also is home to some great food. Make sure you make time to start your day at the Bagel Hut or Village Coffee Shop.
